This enables the entire ship unloading process to be comprehensively monitored. Energy efficiency and productivity are sustainably increased, which also benefits customers.<\/strong><\/p><p>Large volumes of goods from neighboring countries are handled via Constan\u021ba on the Romanian Black Sea coast. UMEX operates five berths there for bulk and liquid goods, as well as bagged cargoes and general cargoes like steel products, timber or project cargo. Open spaces, warehouses and a specialized infrastructure ensure that UMEX can cover all of its customers' freight needs.<\/p><p><strong>From BIM model to digital twin<\/strong><\/p><p>Constantly growing freight volumes and many complex activities running in parallel required UMEX to optimize its loading and unloading operations and make them more efficient. In addition, UMEX was looking to offer innovative solutions that could not be found in a traditional port terminal. <\/p><p>To get a clear overview of data-driven metrics such as handling volumes, productivity, warehouse utilization and loading efficiency, as well as personnel, equipment and energy costs, the UMEX team had already been using state-of-the-art technologies such as monitoring platforms for some time and also created BIM models of its warehouses. However, some of the heterogeneous data was only available on site or via various online platforms.<\/p><p><strong>dTwin as a \u201csingle source of truth\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>The company was looking for a solution that would integrate all visualizations of the complex \u2013 from BIM models to panoramic images \u2013 as well as data from different platforms in a digital twin. Nemetschek partner ALLBIM.NET presented UMEX with the cloud-based SaaS platform dTwin from Nemetschek. This enabled port buildings and infrastructure such as cranes to be precisely visualized in 3D in the context of the port environment. Real-time data from IoT sensors was also integrated. This created a digital twin for visual analyses, simulations and optimizations.<\/p><p>Only by combining building and system information with real-time data from building operations can digital twins unfold their full potential. As a \u201csingle source of truth\u201d, dTwin brings this information together clearly on a central platform and enables a 360-degree view of the port facility's buildings and infrastructure.<\/p><p>\u201cThe development of the strategy, the setup and the fine-tuning of the platform to our needs were carried out in close cooperation with the dTwin team and went smoothly,\u201d says Daniel Nistorescu, Project and Investment Manager at UMEX, praising the support provided by the dTwin team.<\/p><p>The platform provides management with a clear picture of the entire operating process at all times in order to improve energy efficiency and productivity. Anomalies and deviations are visualized at-a-glance, using heat maps.<\/p><p>\u201cWith dTwin, we can analyze running costs almost in real time. This makes it possible to optimize solutions and tariffs for our customers so that they can optimally discharge or load their cargo,\u201d adds Cristian Taranu, General Manager of UMEX.<\/p><p><strong>UMEX Integration with the Digital Twin Ready in Short Time<\/strong><\/p><p>Thanks to the plant's existing BIM model and IoT systems, an operational digital twin was created for UMEX in just one week. The adjustments and fine-tuning of the platform took another two months.<\/p><p>\u201cTogether with the UMEX team, we were able to develop tailor-made solutions in dTwin that directly address the specific challenges of our customer,\u201d says Dr. Jimmy Abualdenien, Head of Digital Twin Product at the Nemetschek Group.<\/p><p>UMEX is currently working on integrating state-of-the-art port cranes and scaling up to other terminals. The platform can be easily adapted and expanded to include additional sensors and systems. Management and departments benefit from comprehensive real-time information on the productivity of depots and facilities. This increases efficiency and helps to optimize processes. The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www3.vectorworks.net\/aec-technology-trends-report?utm_medium=pr&amp;utm_source=coverage&amp;utm_content=aec-digital-technology-trends-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Technology Trends in the AEC Industry<\/a>\u201d report highlights the ongoing development of Building Information Modeling (BIM), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality and virtual reality (AR\/VR), and sustainable design analysis tools.<\/p><p>To produce the report, over 500 current AEC professionals were surveyed on their opinions of technology trends in the industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/resource-center\/aia-firm-survey-report-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Since firms of fewer than 50 employees make up 90% of the industry<\/a>, gathering insights from these practitioners allowed Vectorworks to create a more accurate picture of the prevailing perceptions of technology trends.<\/p><p>The largest group of respondents were architects, with additional responses from interior designers, structural engineers, space planners, and mechanical\/electrical\/plumbing (M\/E\/P) engineers.<\/p><p>Some of the report\u2019s key findings concerning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectorworks.net\/architect\/bim?utm_medium=pr&amp;utm_source=coverage&amp;utm_content=aec-digital-technology-trends-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BIM<\/a>, AI, VR, AR, and sustainable design analysis include:<\/p><ul>\n<li>AEC professionals rated BIM as the most prevalent digital technology in the industry today.<\/li>\n<li>Practitioners are aware that AI needs to evolve and become more bespoke before it reaches the same prevalence as BIM.<\/li>\n<li>A lack of training is the most significant barrier to the adoption of every digital trend (except AR and VR).<\/li>\n<li>Respondents expect every trend to be more widespread in the industry over the next decade.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><br><\/p><p>Excitingly, 62.5% of respondents also said they planned to adopt at least one of these trends in the next five years.<\/p><p><strong>BIM Isn\u2019t Going Anywhere<\/strong><\/p><p>BIM is expected to only grow in popularity and importance over the next 10 years, according to the report. This is likely because of a high return on investment (ROI) and a significant client interest.<\/p><p>\u201cBIM is the cornerstone of modern AEC innovation, transforming how we design, build, and collaborate,\u201d said Vectorworks Senior Product Marketing Director Rubina Siddiqui, Assoc. AIA. \u201cCentralizing data and fostering seamless communication empowers teams to create smarter, more efficient, and sustainable projects, making it the most essential technology in our industry today.\u201d<\/p><p>Survey results indicate that 68% of respondents have already adopted BIM, with 65% of those adopters reporting that BIM was currently delivering the most ROI. Among non-BIM adopters, 38% plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectorworks.net\/newsroom\/beginners-guide-to-bim?utm_medium=pr&amp;utm_source=coverage&amp;utm_content=aec-digital-technology-trends-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopt BIM<\/a> within five years. Additionally, 35% of respondents noted that clients have specifically asked about incorporating BIM into their projects.<\/p><p><strong>The Continuing Rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI)<\/strong><\/p><p>AI has seen a meteoric rise in adoption recently, and most professionals think its significance will only continue to grow.<\/p><p>With a low barrier to entry, design professionals can take advantage of AI solutions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectorworks.net\/newsroom\/ai-visualizer?utm_medium=pr&amp;utm_source=coverage&amp;utm_content=aec-digital-technology-trends-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vectorworks AI Visualizer<\/a> without dedicating significant time or other resources to reap their benefits.<\/p><p>Just over 50% of survey respondents felt that AI is moderately to extremely prevalent in the industry today. In contrast, 34.8% viewed it as slightly prevalent, and only 14.2% considered it not prevalent at all. However, when asked about AI's anticipated prevalence in 10 years, 86.2% predicted it would be moderately to extremely prevalent, with only 9.8% expecting slight prevalence and 4% predicting no prevalence.<\/p><p><strong>Adopting Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)<\/strong><\/p><p>Unlike AI, AR\/VR adopters reported that embracing the technology was relatively resource-intensive, often requiring new software, hardware, and training to unlock its benefits.<\/p><p>Survey results revealed that of adopters, 57% required new software for their adoption process, 50% required employee training, 50% required new hardware, and 40% required a change in their project requirements.
