The new headquarters for Sempra Energy in San Diego, CA serves as a benchmark for future hi-rise development in the city. The 16-story structure includes seven levels of parking (four below grade and three above grade) and 330,000 sq. ft. of new office space. The building which utilizes 1,600 tons of steel is also expected to achieve LEED Gold certification.
The projects program (including office space directly above underground parking) made layout of the columns particularly difficult. As a result, an encased steel beam transfer girder system was utilized. The 46 in deep concrete girder includes two side-by-side W36x210s welded together along their length. These structural members sit on the concrete columns in the parking garage and support the 16 floors of structure above. This system also allowed for the structure above to be erected immediately after the installation of the transfer girders, assuring the tight project schedule was maintained.
